We participated in the Handball County Championships for the first time ever on Friday Jan. 20th. Of the schools participating, Rathcormac was the only school to send a full quota of participants. We had male and female competitors in both the under 11 years and under 13 years categories. By the end of a long evening in Collooney Handball Club we were to come away with five sets of medals. Roisin and Dearbhla played an exhibition match, before being crowned under 11 doubles winners. Alicia came up against a very strong opponent in the under 11 singles final and took silver. The under 13 girls doubles of Niamh and Lauren put in a huge effort to win the final 2-0.
Both boys doubles won their semi-finals to book their places in the finals. In the under 11 Oran and Shane tried valiantly but ultimately had to be content with silver. It was to be a similar story for Paul and Joe who also had to settle for silver in the under 13 final.
The evening had begun with Michael winning the first ever handball match by a Rathcormac pupil when he convincingly won his u11 quarter final. The u13 singles of Bróna and Rian put in solid performances in their semi-finals before eventually losing out.
Many thanks go to Clive and Hugh Slevin for preparing and organising all the boys and girls for this event. Everyone enjoyed it immensely. Thank you too to the parents who provided transport and support for the children.
