Grandparents Day 2025
We were delighted to welcome a huge crowd of grandparents, parents and family members to the hall today Thursday the 23rd of January 2025 for our annual celebration of Grandparents Day.
It is a very special day in our school calendar when we get the chance to tell grandparents how important they are to the children and to thank them for being there to take care of them. We also remembered those grandparents who were no longer with us together with those who couldn’t attend or were in nursing homes or hospitals.
The afternoon began with a prayer service for Grandparents Day led by Fr Tom as part of Catholic Schools Week. The readings, prayers and poems included in this service emphasised grandparents' vital role in passing on the faith and supporting their families in many ways.
Following the prayer service, Mrs Connell welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming to the school braving the bad weather. Grandparents are a very important part of our school community and are always welcome to visit the school. Each class performed a poem or a song in honour of their grandparents and the artwork in the hall was created especially for the day.
Our music group began the show with the Isle Of Innisfree followed by Junior Infants reciting Grandparents. First class got the crowd singing as they joined in with You Are My Sunshine and Que Sera Sera.
We enjoyed two grandparents poems from our second and third classes. A group of girls from sixth class sang an old favourite Edelweiss beautifully. Senior Infants were very happy as they sang and danced along to the Happy Grandparents song. Next up on stage were our fourth-class children who sang My Grandfather's Clock accompanied expertly by Mr Brennan on the guitar.
Ms McLean's class sang a Rathcormac version of the Joe Dolan classic Oh me Oh My.... you're such a special grandparent. Well done on the lyrics, you are a creative class! Fifth class sang Grandparents Day Song very well and Mr Kelly's class sang Grandmother's Hand,a very catchy performance. The whole school sang our favourite National Grandparents Song before our music group concluded the show with Shoo the Donkey and our dancers entertained all present. Mrs Connell thanked all the staff and children for all their work preparing for the day and Moninne and the music group for sharing their talents with us.
She invited all present to stay and enjoy a cuppa,a treat and a chat. A big thank you to the parents of fifth and sixth classes who brought in the home baking and to members of our Parent's Association who helped with the teas and coffees together with our Student Council members and sixth class.
